NOMAD Leadership Bridge

Why NOMAD Is Leading This Work

NOMAD was created to develop, support, and elevate minority athletic directors. Mentoring is central to that mission.

We believe leadership pipelines do not grow by accident. They grow by design.

Athletic administration is one of the most complex leadership roles in education. It demands strategic thinking, compliance expertise, cultural leadership, community engagement, and student advocacy. While preparation programs and certifications provide foundational knowledge, real growth often happens through guided experience and trusted counsel.

The Leadership Bridge was created to ensure that no athletic administrator navigates this work alone.

Through this initiative, experienced athletic directors are paired with emerging or transitioning leaders in a purposeful mentoring relationship. These partnerships are designed to foster professional growth, leadership confidence, and career development through ongoing dialogue, shared problem-solving, and practical application.

Program Objectives

The NOMAD Leadership Bridge seeks to:

  • Support new and aspiring athletic directors as they enter or advance within the profession

  • Strengthen leadership capacity through shared experience and strategic guidance

  • Expand professional networks across regions and conferences

  • Provide culturally responsive mentorship for minority and underrepresented leaders

  • Develop a sustainable leadership pipeline within athletic administration

Mentorship Model

Participants engage in:

  • Structured one-on-one mentoring sessions

  • Monthly leadership conversations

  • Career development planning

  • Real-time problem-solving support

  • National networking opportunities

Mentor-mentee pairings are thoughtfully aligned based on experience level, goals, and professional focus areas.

Why This Matters

Representation in leadership does not happen by chance. It happens when experienced leaders invest intentionally in those coming behind them.

For minority and underrepresented athletic directors, mentorship provides more than guidance. It builds community, affirms belonging, and reinforces that leadership pathways are attainable and sustainable.

The NOMAD Leadership Bridge strengthens individual leaders, supports school communities, and advances the profession as a whole.

When athletic directors are developed, student-athletes are better served.
